Abstract

RESULTS OF INWSTIGATIONS OF LIMESTONE FROM THE QUARRY AT KARSY NEAR OPATÓW (NORTH -EASTERN PERIPHERY OF ŚWIETY KRZYŻ MOUNTAINS)

This paper discusses the limestones of the Lower Turonian which are exposed at Karsy near Opatów, in the north-eastern periphery of Święty Krzyż Mountains. These limestones are being quarried for purpose of monumental buildings, and are also used as building stone ("rag-stones") for local construction works.

Freshly quarried this limestone contain a high quantity of rook humidity and is quite soft, thus is easily trimmed. With the gradual loss of water content it becomes both lighter in weight and harder.
