Abstract

MIOCENE STRATIGRAPHY OF SOUTHERN POLAND WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION PAID TO THE SOUTHERN MARGIN OF THE ŚWIĘTY·KRZYŻ MOUNTAINSIn relation to other regions of the Polish Miocene, such as the Sub-Carpathian ,area and entire Silesia, the Miocene of the southern periphery of the Święty Krzyż Mountains is distinguished by disclosing the fu1lest series of undisburbed sediments. This is due to the fact that the Święty Krzyż region, as well as the Podolian region in USSR have felt but little the effect of the Carpathian orogenesis. On the entire Sub-Carpathian and Silesian area are in evidence certain strati-graphical breaks and, drue to them, there are indications of a violent transgression which in various regions has caused an intermixture of faunae. To a larger extent than in Western Europe, the Miocene of southern Poland has been subdivided in detail; stratigraphical investigations in Poland, closely co-ordinated with analogous studies by Soviet geologists, disclose irrefutably. that it is possib1e to ascertain the stratigraphy and palaeogeography of the Miocene of . Europe, if detailed and accurate investigations are undertaken' for that purpose.
