Abstract

NOTES ON THE MELAPHYRES OF PORĘBA AND MIRÓW NEAR ALWERNIA (CRACOW REGION)

The author describes the melaphyres exposed at Poręba and Mirów, hear Alwernia (approximately 30 km. west of Kraków), paying special attention to the possibility of utilizing these rocks for purposes of road building.

Substratum of the Permian sediments is the Kwaczała arkose (Stephanian). The Rotliegendes is developed as melaphyres and melaphyre tuffites, and as reddish sandstones interbedded with them. These deposits are connected with the depression ascribed to the Saale phase; its direction is NW-SE, and by St. Siedlecki (1954} it has been termed the Nieporaz Brodła depression. Among the melaphyres two varieties may be distinguished: one with a compact structure, the other with a sponge-like or amygdaloidal structure. At the bottom of the cover there are outcrops of red tuffs.
