Abstract

NEW TUFF HORIZONS IN OLDER PALAEOGENE OF FLYSCH CARPATHIANSIn 1959, the authors discovered two new tuff horizons in the PaIaeogene of the Silesian nappe in the Middle·Carpathians. The o l d e r h o r i z o n (Fig. 1); was found in the southern limb of the Gorlice fold. Here the tuffs occur in the middle part of a compIex of variegated shales (Fig: 2) of about 50 meters thickness; this complex separates the upper Istebna sandstones (Danian - Palaeocene) from the Ciężkowice sandstones (Lower Eocene). The age of these tuffs may be defined as highermost Palaeocene, or the boundary of PaIaeocene and Lower Eocene.
