Abstract

BITUMINOUS KOCKS WITH THE ŚWIĘTY KRZYŻ MOUNTAlNS

In 1957 and 1958, the Department of Deposits of Oil, Salt and Chemical Raw-Materials of the Geological Institute investigated the occurrence of series of bituminous rocks in the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic strata of the Święty Krzyż Mountains.

At points of natural exposures, samples were collected and examined from Cambrian and Silurian shales and from Devonian, Carboniferous and Zechstein limestones.

From Mesozoic series, samples were selected from Muschelkalk and fragmentarily from Dogger, Malm and Cretaceous sediments.

Field observations and laboratory research disclosed that of higher bitumina content are the Palaeozoic sediments. The maximum content of hydrocarbons is 0.20% in the Cambrian, 0.31% in the Silurian, 0.45% in the Devonian, 0.12% in the Carboniferous and 0.14% in the Zechstein.

In the Mesozoic sediments there may be observed a gradual decrease in bitumina content, in concurrence with successively younger strata.

The maximum content of bitumina is 0.08% in the Muschelkalk, 0.029% in the Dogger, 0.011% in the Malm and 0.012% in the Cretaceous.
