RESULTS OF GEOCHEMICAL EXAMINATIONS OF RADIOLARIAN SHALES FROM NIEDŹWIADA, NEAR ROPCZYCE

Summary

The present paper contains geochemical characteristics of the Cenomanian radiolarian deposits occurring at Niedźwiada, near Ropczyce. Main deposits occurring in the section examined are represented by more or less marly radiolarian clay shales. Clay substance in these shales is made up by montmorillonite and illite. In addition there occur here also thin laminae of bentonitic clay shales and of bentonitized tuffites. At the top of these latter there are found strongly bituminous shales.
The deposits here considered are geochemically differentiated. Hence, the radiolarian shales are enriched in Mn, Cu, Sr and Ba, the bentonitized tuffites – in Mn, V, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Co, and the bituminous shales – in V, Mo, Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb, Co. Most differentiated geochemical character is typical of the bituminous shales. This is connected with biochemical accumulation of rare metals. The V, Mo and Pb contents are directly proportional to the quantities of bitumens encountered in rock. Other rare metals such as Ni, Cr, Co and Mn also increase, however, their proportional increase of concentration has not been ascertained. This proves the existence of an additional way of enrichment in these elements (f. ex. adsorption from sea water by clay minerals). It is important that bituminous shales occur here in an association with pyroclastic deposits, a fact encountered also in other section, as well (I. Gucwa, T. Wieser, 1965). The pyroclastic material is a source of rare metals necessary for the development of a great deal of the world of microorganisms (T. Wieser,1963).
