Abstract

ON PARALLIZATION OF BROWN COAL SEAMS ON THE BASIS OF SPORE-AND-POLLEN ANALYSIS

Palynological investigations of brown coal were made on samples from three bore holes situated in the vicinities of Lubin Legnicki and Ścinawa. Four complete series of coal were recorded in the deepest bore hole in the region of Ustronie. In two shallower bore holes (remote 19,5 km and 25,5 km from the mam bore hole) situated on the southwest, coal series were incomplete and intercalated by clastic sediments. The age of the series in bore hole Ustronie was determined on the basis of spore-and-pollen analysis, as follows: lowermost series lV corresponding to the IV seam of Dolne Łużyce - Upper Oligocene, series III - Lower Miocene, series II and Ila - Middle Miocene and serie I - Upper Miocene.

In the marginal bore holes coal beds containing spore-and-pollen assemblage corresponding to that of the series IV are completely missing. Sedimentary complex of brown coal in these bore holes begins with a bed characteristic of a strongly similar pollen composition to that from series III ,of bore hole Ustronie. The second markedly distinguishing bed in the marginal bare holes is that called series -IIa of the main bore hole. The series II, when comparing diagrams, may be seen in bore hole Wirczyn. On the other hand, in the southwesternmost bore hole Nieidźwiedzice, there exists no bed, the pollen assemblage of which might correspond to the series n. The series I distinctly seen in bore hole Ustronie, does not find its equivalents in the marginal bore holes.

Parallization of coal beds occurring in a given deposit was made on the basis of a similarity of pollen spectrum formed under local conditions. These changes strongly obliterate the picture characteristic of determined stratigraphical horizon, however, they are guiding ones when correlating-coal beds of the same sedimentary basin.
