Abstract
SOME RESULTS OF STUDIES ON THE RELATIONS BETWEEN PETROGRAPHIC COMPOSITION OF BROWN COALS FROH TURÓW AND THEIR BRIQUETTING PROPERTIESSummaryBrown coal briquettes for firing purposes should be characterized by a stable and adequate mechanical strength. The present work is an attempt at explaining the causes of great water absorbability of the Turoszów coals, by means of petrographic and chemical methods. Microscope examinations of the coals taken at the Turów I exposure, point to a considerable amount of gelled xylinite showing features approximate to dopplerite, and to numerous coal banks characterized by an increased content of inorganic substances. Furthermore, the chemical examinations have shown the presence of various banks with higher amounts of primary tar and of hydrogen, whose origin should be related to the bituminous coal horizons ascertained in the deposits. The examinations of the fundamental briquetting parameter, i.e. of compression strength, have demonstrated that the Turoszów coals with low ash contents, can yield briquettes characterized, on the one hand, by adequate compression strength, on the other, however, by great water absorbability, even if they are produced of coals with considerable amount of primary tar. A comparison of the results of microscope examinations and of water absorbability of coals allowed to state that coals having more than 10% of gelled xylinite are characterized by a high water absorbability that is responsible for disintegration of the briquettes in study.Downloads
