Abstract
PROSPECTION FOR FLINTS IN POLANDSummaryThe realization of the problem “Prospection for flint deposits in Poland” was begun in 1966 by the Division of Construction Mineral Deposits of the Geological Institute. Prospecting works were carried out due to the demand of the developing home industry producing flint articles. To such articles, so far produced only from imported flints, belong: flint linings of “Silex” type, grinders for mills and granulated flint for production of abrasives. So far, only some larger concentrations of flints were elaborated, mainly in the NE margin of the Świętokrzyskie Mts., within the area of the Cracow – Częstochowa Jura Belt, in the Bug River Cretaceous area, and in the Quaternary formation area of the Białystok voivodeship (Fig. 1).On account of the occurrence forms and the high economical importance of flints three main types were distinguished among the concentrations examined:1 – Concentrations of flints of concretionary type in carbonate formations “in s1tu”;2 – siliceous concentrations in the form of banks and seams; 3– secondary concentrations in the Quaternary Formations. Flint concentrations, arranged according to the subdivision cited above are present on Fig. 1. Petrographical description and results of examinations of usability are given in the text and in Tabs. 1–4. Examinations of industrial usability of home flints have demonstrated that in the next future one can, on the basis of home mineral raw materials, start a production of abrasives and grinders, although greater difficulties may arise as concerns supply of adequately rich mineral raw material basis to produce linings of “Silex” type.Downloads
