Abstract

SOLUTION OF GEOLOGICAL-ENGINEERING AND HYDROGEOLOGICAL PROBLEMS BY MEANS OF ISOTOPIC METHODSThe paper deals with the application of radioisotopes in engineering geology and hydrogeology works. Closed nuclear radiation sources are used in .measuring the bulk density and humidity of soils. In the paper there are given typical calibration curves for some probes, worked out in the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy in Cracow, as well as principles of selecting the radioisotope tracers used in hydrogeological studies. Moreover, the utility of durable complex compounds marked by various radioactive isotopes is stressed, too. When using in the field, these are easier to apply than the ideal isotopic tracers, f.e. tritiated water. ln hydrogeological investigations based on radioisotopes tracers, the works concerning measurements of ground water flows are most developed. In addition to this, there are also presented estimates of water resources in underground basins, as well as attempts to determine the relationship between these basins. Further, it was pointed at the possibilities of method of absolute age determination of ground waters by means of native tritium and C14 serving for solution of special hydrogeological problems.
