Abstract

TERTIARY DEPOSITS IN THE VICINITIES OF NYSAIn the present paper the substratum of Tertiary deposits in tectonical deep of Nysa is discussed in brief. At the Miocene time (Tortonian) the area of deep was invaded by the sea. The marine deposits have been investigated in bore holes Wawrzyńcowice and Nysa. The occurrence of marine deposits within the region considered allows to shift the extent of the Miocene sea to the northwest of the boundary previously determined by R. Michael (1907). Above the marine Miocene are found fresh-water Tertiary deposits. They represent rather a monotonous facial complex composed of clays, silts and sands. Beds and, lenses of brown coal occur sporadically and do not reach considerable thicknesses. A lack of thicker brown ,coal seams probably is caused by a rapid sedimentation of clayey-arenaceous material in the subsiding basin. On the basis of palynological and palaeobotanical studies the deposits of the fresh-water Tertiary should be referred to the Upper Miocene and the Lower Pliocene. The paper is also briefly concerned with the Quaternary deposits of the area in study.
