Abstract

OCCURRENCE OF BITUMENS IN THE POLISH LOWLAND AREA IN THE LIGHT OF HYDROCHEMICAL STUDIES

Within the framework of the fundamental geoIogical research programme carried out in the Polish Lowland area by the GeoIogical Institute in the years 19581962, systematic hydrochemical studies on the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic formations were begun, as well. These studies and the results of the researches made by the Petroleum Industry yielded valuable information on the possibilities of occurrence of bitumens in the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic formations of the Polish Lowland. When elaborating the results obtained, the W. A. Sulin's classification of mineralized waters was applied. The classification embraces four fundamental types of brine, i.e. chloride-calcium, chloride-magnesium, acid-carbonate-sodium and sulphate-sodium types. Degree and character of mineraliztion, as well as presence of biophile elements are thought to be very important indices here. Moreover, the existence of zones with chloride-magnesium acid-carbonate-sodium and sulphate-sodium brines was established, too. They occur within the marginal parts of the Lowland sedimentary basin, as well as in the younger Mesozoic deposits.

Hydrochemical studies are to be continued and their scope will be increased. According to the data, which will be collected, the lithologic-stratigraphical complexes of different hydrochemical and hydrodynamical characters will be determined. This should allow to obtain some data to project new prospectings for bitumen deposits. In consequence of this, a better qualitative and quantitative interpretation of electrical logs will be possible, as well. This way, new resources of medicinal mineral waters should be obtained.
