Abstract

MELANTERITE IN DRILL CORES FROM THE VICINITY OF STRZEGOM

Summary

The authors describe a concentration of a mineral deposited in brown coals and coaly silts in drill cores preserved over a year in a drill core repository. Refractory indices, angle of optical axis, and results of chemical analyses point to a mineral from the melanterite ·group, characterized by a general formula like (Fe, Mg) SO47×H2O. Derivatographic examinations also point to a melanterite mineral here. It appears that this mineral has been formed due to oxidizing process of sulphides in brown coals and coaly silts.
