KAOLIN DEPOSIT AT KAMIEŃ, NEAR MIRSK

Summary

As concerns its features, the kaolin from Kamień (Lower Silesia) distinctly differs from those of the other home deposits. The differences mainly concern both structural features and a lower content of iron compounds. As a rule, crystalline schists, locally also gneissose granites, are mother rocks of the kaolin here considered. Parts of the deposits, formed as a result of the alteration of schists, are characterized by a coarse scaly structure. The process of kaolinization is here responsible for the alteration of muscovite scales into kaolinite, and thus this latter consist of scales even more than 1 mm in length. The thick-scaled clay rock reveals an exceptionally low plasticity here. The results of the research of the kaolin samples taken at outcrops and in bore holes have been analysed. The examinations have comprised mineral and grain composition, and have been made on the basis of X-ray, microscope, chemical and thermal-differential analyses. Attention has also been paid to a quartz-topaz lode that cuts the kaolin deposit in study.
