Abstract

SANTONIAN DEPOSITS FOUND BY BORE HOLES IN THE VICINITY OF SIENIAWA

Summary

The purpose of this work was to determine the petrographical nature and stratigraphical position of the Upper Cretaceous grey marls found to occur in the vicinity of Sieniawa (Ziemia Lubuska Region). These marls have been encountered at a depth of about 295 m in four bore holes (Fig. 1). The mineral chemical composition of these deposits is shown in Tab. 1. The stratigraphical position has been established by studying the character of the foraminifer assemblage found in these deposits (Tab. 2). The stratigraphical ranges of 17 foraminifer species (Tab. 3) have been taken according to the works made by W. P. Wasilenko (1954), W. Pożaryski and E. Witwicka (1956), K. Pożaryska (1954, 1957), E. Gawor-Biedowa (1961, 1965), E. Witwicka and S. Cieśliński (1962), and S. Alexandrowicz (1900).
The marls here encountered are thought to be of Santonian age, most probably corresponding to its middle part that comprises (acoording to S. Cieśliński) the following macrofaunistic horizons: Inoceramus patootensis L o r., Goniotheutis granulates (Bl a i n v.) and Inoceramus lingua G o l d f.
According to the macrofaunistic subdivision this zone were here a Santonian horizon, without the form Bolivinoides strigillata (C h a p.). The assemblage here described may be compared with those of the same age, found to occur in various Cretaceaus sections within the entire area of Poland (Fig. 3).
