Abstract

GLACITECTONIC PHENOMENA IN THE QUATERNARY FORMATIONS OF THE LUBIN REGIONSummaryExploration of filling sands for copper mines discovered for the geological examinations a series of interesting exposures of the Quaternary formations. The area in study is situated about 5 km north-west of Lubin. Morphologically, the sand deposit makes here a dome-shaped from in the vicinity of the south-eastern margin of the Dalkowskie Wzgórza.The Quaternary deposits, are represented here mainly by fine-grained and medium-grained sands with intercalations of gravels silts and loams. These formations underwent strong disturbances, mainly folding, at places also discontinuous deformations. The folds reveal amplitudes up to several metres and show a considerable morphological differentiation, from flat forms to abrupt and overturned ones. In the orientation of their axes the NE-SW direction predominates. The discontinuous deformations are represented by normal and inverse faults characterized by the amplitudes amounting to several ten centimeters. They are grouped along two directions: NE-SW and W-E. The character of these disturbances proves their glacitectonic origin.The NW direction of folds demonstrates that the pressure came from south-east. The above features of the spatial structure should be related with the pressure caused by the expansion of an ice bay from the south-eastern direction. The folds were produced mainly due to the static load on the substratum by the glacier.A predominance of arenaceous materials within the folded areas excludes any possibility of plastic deformations in the zone of permafrost within the foreland of the glacier.The area comprised by glacitectonic disturbances is situated outside the southern boundary of the Middle-Polish Glaciation in the Warta Stage. In connection with this the gneiss of the forms under considerations should be related with the older phase of this glaciation, i.e. with the Odra Stage.
