Abstract

COVERS OF THE LOWER CARBONIFEROUS WEATHERED LOAMS IN THE CENTRAL AREA OF THE LUBLIN REGION (SE POLAND)SummaryIn the central area of the Lublin Region (SE Poland) some borehole sections (Niesiołowice IG-l, Świdno IG-l, Zakrzew IG-l, Giełczew IG-l) reveal the presence of weathered loam covers, some metres in thickness, to rest above the Devonian limestones. They are bunt up of clay minerals, mainly of illite, with a small admixture of kaolinite. They also contain a considerable admixture of detrital quartz. These loams also fill in the fissures in limestones. They are thought to be the products of karst weathering. The age of these processes has been determined as Tournaisian. In two boreholes (Zakrzew IG-l and Świdno IG-l) the loams are covered by the Upper Visean kaolinized formations with an admixture of volcanic materials. A greater degree of kaolinization and the presence of montmorillonite prove a change in the climatic conditions at the Lower Carboniferous time. The presence of the weathered loams in the Lower Dinantian deposits of the Lublin. Region points to a moderate, later somewhat warmer climate, which governed during a short-lasting continental episode, after the Famennian sedimentation, and prior to the sedimetation of the paralic formations of Upper Visean age.
