Abstract

DEVELOPMENT OF PROBLEMS AND ROCK MATERIAL BASE IN THE WESTERN OF DISTRICT AREAS OF POLAND WITHIN THE PERIOD OF THIRTY YEARS OF POLISH PEOPLE'S  REPUBLIC EXISTENCE

Summary

The intensive geological prospecting researches began immediately after the end of World War II. The very first publication on rock materials of the Upper and Lower Silesia region written by M. Kamieński appeared in January, 1946. In later years between 1946–1949 the further publications by K. Smulikowski, W. Bobrowski, A. Bolewski, H. Gruszczyk, J. Kostecki, Z. Tokarski at al. were presented.
The period of the systematic prospecting and documentary projects dates back to the year of 1952 when the Central Geological Office was established. The enormous base of rock products has been recognized and documented. The major achievements made in this field include:
1. Far-reaching petrographic studies over granites with reference to explanation of the leucogranites origin. Discovery of new leucogranite deposits in the Izera Mountains.
2. Discovery and utilization of new magnesite ore at Wiry near Świdnica.
3. Ascertaining of new kaolin beds, especially in the region of Świdnica with explanation of their origin.
4. Elaboration of the production technology of kaolin from the Cretaceous kaolin-bearing sandstones occurring in the region of Zebrzydowa.
5. A great development of clay material base, especially that of the Tertiary age.
6. Initial operation in the big mine of vein quartz at Rozdroże Izerskie.
7. Discovery and utilization of new large deposits of glass-sandstones in the region of Bolesławice.
8. Recognition of natural ore deposit on the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
The special editions of maps and atlases concerning the problems of rock materials in scale 1:100 000, 1:300 000 and 1:500 000 have been, elaborated. The complex regional studies over raw materials constituting the basis for preparing economic regional plans have been elaborated. Further rapid development in mining industry taking place in the Western District Areas is scheduled to be anticipated.
