Uwagi o szybkości procesów akumulacyjnych w czwartorzędzie na Niżu Polskim

Abstract

SOME REMARKS ON THE RATE OF ACCUMULATION PROCESSES IN THE POLISH LOWLANDS IN THE QUATERNARY

There m growing evidence that the glacial Pleistocene, that is the part of the Quaternary when great Scandinavian glaciations were waxing and waning in Europe, comprises the time span of at least 700000 years, that is at least the same as the Brunhes paleomagnetic epoch. There are also numerous data which make possible to estimate duration of successive waves of cooling, during which glaciations were developing, and warm waves corresponding to interglacials. There are also some data bearing information on the rates of accumulation and sedimentation of the main and most common facies of Pleistocene deposits in glaciated areas, defining glacials and interglacials in geological sections. Comparison of all these data shows that deposits representing these most common Pleistocene facies have been formed in a very short time, much shorter than the time span of stratigraphic units defined by them.

It follows that even the most complete stratigraphic sections present the record of a small part of the time span of the Quaternary. A much greater part of the time span corresponds to the time of formation of surfaces of different origin, which nowadays separate individual series. The series represent record of some extremal situation and they make the basis for the stratigraphy of the Pleistocene. The surfaces separated by them require further more detailed studies in order to precise their origin and age.
