Abstract

A FEW PLANT REMNANTS FROM THE TORONIAN OF UPPER SILESIA

The Tertiary floras of Central Europe appear mainly on areas of continental sedimentation, which to a large degree are devoid of fauna fossils. In such cases, the fossil floras are an important index for the stratigraphical position of the sediments.

Accepting the principle of changes of character of the Tertiary flora, ranging from the tropical - during the Eocene to the present day - cool-temperate flora, a criterium for the age identification of Miocene floras has been the occurrence of tropical and subtropical species, and the relation of these evergreen plants to decidous species.

This criterium has been also adopted by. R. Kräusel (1920, 1921) who together with H. Reimann, E. Reichenbach and F. Meyer undertook the revision of the palaeobotanical collections originating from Lower and Upper Silesia.
