Abstract

CARBONIFEROUS FORAMINIFERS FROM KOZŁOWA GÓRA NEAR BYTOM (UPPER SILESIA)

In the dark-grey argillaceous, somewhat marly shales exposed at Kozłowa Góra near Bytom (northwestern part of Upper Silesian Basin) (Fig. 1, W, Cg), the presence of fairly numerous foraminifers is proved. In these shaIes there appears a relatively ample fauna of moluscs, brachiopods and trilobites which make it possible to establish both age and stratigraphical position of these sediments; a list of this fauna has been given in the Polish text. Comparing this faunal assemblage with the assemblages described by S. Weigner (1938), M. Schwarzbach (1936) and K. Bojkowski (1958), the argillaceous shales exposed at Kozłowa Góra might be assigned to the Hrusov beds (Namurian A) as a marine horizon of X. Franciszka. These shales represent an intercalation within continental sediments, developed in the shape of grey argillaceous shales, siltstones and sandstones (Fig. 2). In the presented section there also appears a very thin coal seam from which A. Jachowicz has identified both microspores and macrospores. According to A. Jachowicz, the results of this palynological analysis point to the Hrusov beds.
