Abstract

THE CRETACEOUS AND JURASSIC LUBLIN GRABEN

The author undertook the attempt of summing up all data known on the occurrence of the Cretaceous and Jurassic in the area situated east of line Mogielnica-Radom-Rachów-Biłgoraj (Central Poland).

The attached map showing range, surface morphology and thickness of both Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments, as well as geological sections, may serve as proof that westwards and southwestwards from the Bug river the thicknesses of the Cretaceous and the Jurassic systematically increase. The average inclination of the bottom surface of the Cretaceous does not exceed·0.5

In the investigated distribution of units structural of the first order the axis of greatest deepening (of thicknesses of the Cretaceous exceeding 1000 m:, and of those of the Jurassic exceeding 800 m.) extends towards the western margin of the depression.

In the author's opinion, this kind of tendencies in the development of maximum thicknesses is connected with uniform movements of the sedimentation base. On the basis of bore-holes the author established the marginal zone of the depression, which in the west limits the so-called Lublin graben to extend in section Biłgoraj-Józefów in the shape of a fault with a throw of some 1000 m.

On the basis of an analysis of geophysical evidence, and of bore-holes it was suggested to extend the dislocation zone beyond Biłgoraj as far as Mogielnica near Radom.

This zone, separates in Central Poland two structural elements of divergent character of the first order.
