Abstract

TITANIUM-ZIRCON SANDS FROM CAPE VERGA IN GUINEA

The paper deals with accumulations of sands with an unusual content of heavy minerals, occurring on the beach shore of the Atlantk Ocean near Cape Verga in Guinea.

Due to conditions favorable to cumulation of heavy minerals, these sands were amassed on bay-like rounded sections of the shore gently inclined towards the sea.

The marked content of dark heavy minerals causes the sands to be of dark-grey to black color.

The granulation of the quartz sands forming the beaches, and of the accumulation of heavy minerals appearing in or on top of these sands is presented in Table 1.

The approximate mineralogical-petrographic composition of the titanium-zircon sands as revealed in grain fractions is shown in Table 2. These tables have been supplemented by suitable graphs (Fig. 5 and 6).
