Abstract

GEOCHEMICAL STUDIES ON VOLCANITES OF THE ŚWIĘTY KRZYŻ MOUNTAINS PART II – DIABASES

This paper is a continuation of study on volcanites of the Święty Krzyż Mountains. Part I deals with the geochemical problems concerning lamprophyres and Part II is devoted to those, concerning diabases. Both parts are an attempt to explain the genesis of metallizing process occurring within the area of the mountains in guestion. The author's studies comprised diabases and their surrounding rocks originating from the following localities: Bardo, Zalesie, Widełki, Wzorki and Psary-Kąty.

Zn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Co and Cr have been determined in the rocks by·means of both polarographic and spectrographic methods. Samples collected for analyses were each of about 1 kg and represented an average composition of the rocks of study. The author has determined that in diabases of the Święty Krzyż Mountains zinc occurs in a range from 0.007 to 0.040%. Its average content in rock varies by some 0.01%. Copper occurs in quantities ranging from 0.03 to 0.05%. The quantities of lead in rock is 0.005%, the content of cobalt, in turn, oscillates between 0.02 and 0.005%, and that of nickel between 0.005 and 0.015%.

In spite of the fact that absolute contents of nickel and cobalt are diversified in various regions, the Ni/Co ratio is uniform in all diabases of the Święty Krzyż Mountains.

Content of chromium in rocks ranges from 0.002 to 0.014%.

The occurrence of such trace elements as indium and tin was established, in diabases for the first time there.

As a result of the investigations made, the influence of the hydrothermal processes upon the contents of various elements in rocks was ascertained.
