Abstract


LACUSTRINE EEMIAN INTERGLACIAL AT GOCZAŁKÓW NEAR STRZEGOM (LOWER SILESIA)

Summary

In the upper course of the Wierzbiak river valley (right-bank tributary of the Kaczawa river), in the north-western part of the settlement Goczałków (Fig. 1), interglacial gyttja of Eemian age has been found by two shallow geotechnical bore holes (palynological analysis thanks to Dr Zofia Borówko-Dłużakowa). The boreholes pierced only the top part of the interglacial deposits down to 2 or 2,5 m.
The top of the gyttja deposits is found here at a depth of 8-9,3 m from the surface (after the deduction of earth embankments about two metres in thickness). Immediately above the interglacial deposits there rests a solifluction bed of the last Glaciation, consisting mainly of weathered material of local granites. Its minimum thickness amounts here to 6 metres, maximum - more than 8,5 metres. Higher up, there rest river deposits of Holocene age, from 2 to 3,5 m in thickness. The occurrence of the interglacial lacustrine gyttja within the piedmont landscape creates a problem concerning the genesis of the then lake. The solution of this problem will be possible after a more detailed reconnaissance of the Pleistocene profile of the deposits from the Wierzbiak river valley.
