Abstract

PROSPECTS TO USE WELL-LOGGING METHODS TO DISCOVER AND EVALUATE IRON ORE DEPOSITS

Summary

The feasibility of well-logging methods to discover and evaluate iron ore deposits has been studied on the basis of an experimental survey completed in one of the work areas in NE Poland. The possible utilization of resistivity logging, self potential logging, electrode potentials logging, neutron-gamma and gamma-gamma logging has been considered. Electrical well-logging methods proved effective in tracing out ore-mineralized zones, and the iron content could be determined by gamma-gamma logging. Using relative units the iron content has been determined in three boreholes with an error of ±3.4%. Theoretical calculations indicate the feasibility to apply selective gamma-gamma logging in the near future. Laboratory tests revealed the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility on the iron content in the rocks. A set of the mast effective surveys for the work area has been defined.
