Abstract


PETROLOGY OF THE DOLOMITIC ROCKS OF THE MARUSZYNA KLIPPE

Summary

Detrital and biogenic rocks have been distinguished among the dolomites of the Maruszyna Klippe. The detrital dolomites are dolorudites locally grading into doloarenites. The dolorudites are composed of sharp-edged micrite - algal – dolomites fragments. The cement includes fine-grained dolomites and clay matter, both impregnated with rusty iron hydroxides. The biogenic dolomites are composed of pellets resembling algal forms and cemented with fine-grained dolomite and clay matter. They are massive (Pl. I, Fig. 1) or porous (Pl. II, Fig. 3) and show haphazard (Pl. II, Fig. 4) or parallel fabric. On the grounds of a different development of carbonate minerals, micrite-sparite and micrite dolomites have been distinguished. The latter frequently contain nest-like concentrations of epigenetic dolomite (Pl. III, Fig. 6). The biogenic (algal) dolomites here described are probably lithified algal mats. Their mineral composition indicates that they have been deposited far from the margin of the marine basin in alkaline waters of a considerable salts content. The dolomite was syndepositional or was formed during the earliest stage of diagenesis. These rocks were subject to secondary recrystallization. Dolorudites are the result of tectonic activity that affected the algal dolomites. The lithofacies development of the dolomites suggests that they are of Triassic age. They bear resemblance to some dolomites of southern Poland (of the Zawiercie area and of the Sub-Tatric series of the Tatra mountains).
