GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF THE UPPER PLEISTOCENE SEDIMENTS OF THE SZCZECIN LOWLAND

Summary

Five lithostratigraphic horizons have been distinguished within the Upper Pleistocene sedimentary cover of the Szczecin Lowland. The lowest one is the till of the Main Stade of the North Polish Glaciation – horizon I (Fig. 1). Locally it is covered by horizon II developed as sands with boulders and gravel of the ablation moraine. The successive younger fluvioglacial sediments – horizon III represented by sands with gravel locally form a fossil terrace on the edge of the Szczecin Lowland Horizon IV composed of clay-silty sediments and occassionally of silly-sandy material of the dammed-lake fades is common in the central part of the Szczecin Lowland, and mainly the margin of the Szczecin Lagoon. It is overlain by lacustrine sandy sediments – horizon V. Horizons III–V were formed during gradual disappearence of the continental glacier of the Main Stade and chiefly during areal deglaciation. Initially the ice was stagnant and subsequently dead (Fig. 2). No evidence exists for the oscillating disappearance of the last continental glacier.
